Tips for care of your bagpipes

On receiving your instrument you may find that the joints may require some additional hemp. Bear in mind that once you start playing the instrument it will fill with moisture, which will expand the hemp. Add additional hemp as necessary and check the bores are concentric as you look down the bore of the drones.

RG Hardie provides maintenance items to ensure you are able to maintain optimum performance from your bagpipes. During playing moisture will appear on the inside of the drones and we recommend they be brushed through after every period of playing with cotton or nylon brushes.

We recommend using ‘Piper’ blackwood oil once a year to protect the wood. Cracks can be caused due to over hemping, not removing moisture from the drones and leaving the instrument in extreme climates for prolonged periods.

The bagpipes should be stored in a cool dry environment and out of direct sunlight. RG Hardie provide Airtight Seasoning for leather bags, which ensures the bag, is airtight and absorbs moisture. If you require further care contact your local RG Hardie dealer for assistance.
